It has long been realised that payment of
death duties is successfully evaded on a very large scale by the
Chinese, for various reasons. The Chinese Merchant with his well-
-known secretiveness, using different aliases in his various transactions, has always managed to conduct his business on lines uncomprehended of the European. He does not intend that his estate shall be charged with death duties, and he makes careful provisions that on his death none but his chosen relatives, resident often in China, shall be in a position to unravel his affairs. He will if possible die at his native home in China, his death remaining unreported; and in many cases he is either a total
